Why Do I Want a Shared Host?
If you have a domain name and want to have a standard, easy-to-read
URL such as http://www.my.domain/ you need to do one
of the following:
- Have your own dedicated web server
- Request
our Shared Host web feature. This allows you to get the same professional-looking
URL as large dedicated sites without the cost and effort.
Without the Shared Host, your URL at
PRIMUS would be: http://www.primushost.com/~myusername/ If anyone
tries the URL http://www.my.domain/ they would get an error message. With the
Shared Host, your URL would be: http://www.my.domain/ If anyone
looks up the address for www.my.domain, it will appear to be an actual machine
with an IP address and will have no relation to www.primushost.com - www.my.domain
has its own web server. How Do I Get a Shared Host? To
create a Shared Host web server, you simply need to send a request to PRIMUS
Sales. (You must also have a domain name, but not necessarily at PRIMUS).
We will set up a separate directory for your virtual host on a different server,
and a confirmation email will be sent to you directing you to this page on how
to set it up. You should telnet and ftp directly to the host (www.my.domain)
to manage the site. There you will find the sub-directory 'virtual_html' which
is where you should put all of your .html files. This sub-directory also contains
the bin for any cgi executables. For more information on how to install and
maintain a web site at primushost.com, please read the document How
to Create a WWW Home Page. Back to
