What is UseNet?
USENET is a world-wide collection of discussion groups (newsgroups). It is widely carried over the Internet, but technically it is a separate entity.
Sites that are not connected to the Internet can still join USENET and exchange news articles.
USENET exists by the collective effort of news system administrators and has no controlling organization or universally enforced rules.
There are thousands of newsgroups devoted to almost any topic and new newsgroups get created every day.
By default, you FTP as anonymous (userid) and use your email address as a password.
So, set this information in the Preferences line under the Customize
Menu.
Configuring Newswatcher
NewsWatcher is a newsreader program for the Macintosh. It keeps track of which newsgroups you want to read and the articles you have already
seen.
When you run it for the first time, it asks you for information about the news server to use. Put in the following information:
News server: news.primushost.com
Mail server: relay1.primushost.com
Then it will go and download the Full Group List from the server (the big list
of newsgroups). This will take a while, but don't worry: NewsWatcher
will keep this list on your Mac and won't have to ask for
it every time!
Selecting Newsgroups and Reading News
After it is done getting the Full Group List, NewsWatcher will display it in a window. To select the groups you want, choose New Group Window
from the File menu. Then drag newsgroups from the Full Group List window to the new group list window. After you have selected a group you
want to keep, choose the File/Save menu item.
To read a newsgroup, double-click on it. A new window will pop up showing all the current articles in that newsgroup. To read an article,
double-click on it and it will pop up in a window.
Decoding Binaries
NewsWatcher has features to automatically decode certain standard types of binary files. Look in the NewsWatcher help or contact
support@primushost.com for more information.
